At our Mickleover Preschool, we love giving our children opportunities to learn through hands-on, real-world experiences. This week, our preschoolers took on an exciting new project: building their very own bug house!
With their Bob the Builder hard hats firmly on and under the close guidance of our staff, the children were introduced to a selection of carefully chosen child-safe tools. For many, this was their first time experiencing “power tools” in action — a big moment that came with a lot of excitement (and a lot of concentration!).
The children worked together to help build a bug house that will provide a safe and welcoming home for mini-beasts such as ladybirds, bees, and woodlice. While the activity was full of fun and laughter, it was also packed with valuable learning opportunities:
Bug houses aren’t just fun to make — they’re also an important way to support local wildlife. Our new creation will help pollinators like bees and butterflies, while also giving children a chance to observe insects up close in their natural habitat. This helps spark curiosity, builds respect for the environment, and encourages early science skills.
The pride on the children’s faces when they saw their finished bug house was priceless. Not only did they get to play a part in creating something real and lasting, but they also learned that with teamwork and care, even the smallest hands can achieve big things.
We can’t wait to see which creatures will soon call our bug house “home”! 🐞🦋🐝
