World Book Day is always a much-loved date in our nursery calendar, and this year was more magical than ever. Children and staff came dressed as their favourite book characters—think superheroes, princesses, Harry Potter, animals, pirates, Mr Men & Little Miss, and of course, plenty of Gruffalos and dinosaurs! The buzz of excitement was felt from the moment the doors opened.
We began the day with lots of storytelling and reading, where children proudly shared their favourite books brought in from home. Staff read familiar tales in small groups, and even the babies enjoyed sensory story sessions filled with props, songs, and rhythm.
One of the highlights was our library role play zone, where children became little librarians—scanning books, stamping them out, and recommending titles to one another. It supported early literacy, maths (through sequencing and counting), and communication skills in the most playful way.
Each room got stuck into a range of book-themed activities tailored to the stories the children love most:
Mealtimes became storytime too! Our themed lunch menu included Barry the Fish with Fingers fishcakes, a Hungry Caterpillar-style fruit platter, and for pudding, children enjoyed mini Paddington marmalade cakes—a sticky and sweet tribute to everyone’s favourite bear.
Throughout the day, children developed key EYFS skills through meaningful play:
Thank you to all our wonderful families who helped us celebrate by supporting costumes and bringing in books from home. World Book Day 2025 was a truly magical celebration of imagination, expression and a shared love of reading. We can’t wait to do it all again next year! 📚✨
