There is no one quite like Sir David Attenborough. For generations, he has brought the wonders of the natural world into our living rooms, teaching us to love, respect, and protect our planet. So, when it came to celebrating his monumental 100th birthday, we knew we had to do something truly special!
At our nurseries, we dedicated a whole day to exploring the great outdoors, learning about incredible creatures, and figuring out how even the smallest hands can make a big difference to our Earth.
Here is a look at what our wild little explorers got up to...
Our rooms were transformed into a patchwork of the world's most amazing places. We had LOTS of themed messy play activities, spanning from dense, green jungles to the deepest blue oceans. The children dived headfirst (and hands-first!) into exploring different textures, mimicking the habitats of their favourite animals and learning more about them.
One of the absolute highlights of the day was our small-world David Attenborough Theatre. Complete with tickets to buy at the box office, our clever children took turns putting on imaginative talks about animals. We listened to some fantastic, creative facts about lions, whales, and monkeys, with our mini-naturalists channeling their best whispering "Attenborough voices"!
Through our play, we spoke gently about the challenges these animals face and brainstormed what we can do at home and at nursery to help protect their natural habitats.
Over at our Mickleover nursery, the children got a wonderful surprise. Armed with magnifying glasses and quiet voices, they got the chance to look at butterflies! Watching the intricate patterns on their wings up close was a moment of pure magic, reminding us all of the tiny wonders right on our doorstep. They also took it in turns, carefully constructing their own 'seed bombs' to scatter in the planters outside and watch their seeds grow into flowers that our buzzy bee friends will love!
An adventure-filled day requires a lot of fuel, and our kitchen teams certainly delivered! Our meals were just as wild as our activities:
Of course, a 100th birthday party isn’t complete without a card. To wrap up our amazing day, the children sat down to create some wonderful birthday cards to send to Sir David Attenborough. Filled with bright colours, handprints, and plenty of love, these cards are on their way to him to say a huge thank you for inspiring us to look after our beautiful planet.
Thank you to all our staff for making the day so magical, and to our wonderful children for bringing so much enthusiasm to learning about our world.
Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David! 🌲🐙🐢
